Karla DeVito gained international recognition for creating the live female character with Meat Loaf and Jim Steinman for their entire original tour in support of the Bat out of Hell album (1977-79). Their live performance of Paradise by the Dashboard Light on Britain’s Old Grey Whistle finally broke the album world wide. She sang with Meat Loaf on his Steinman penned last album Braver Than We Are (2016). Karla starred on Broadway as Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance (1981), was screen-tested in London twice and was Ken Russell’s choice to play Evita, per Russell’s autobiography Altered States, and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s recent memoir Unmasked. She married her Pirates co-star Robby Benson in 1982 and they co-wrote several platinum songs for Diana Ross’ Swept Away, and We Are Not Alone (iconic library dance song) for John Hughes The Breakfast Club film, which she also sang. Karla was the 1st live guest on MTV and brought in 1982 on MTV’s 1st ever Rocking New Years Eve. She hosted MTV’s entire first documentary series Rock Influences. Karla starred in the Benson written and directed comedy film Modern Love (1990). She received rave reviews for Ellie Greenwich’s original Leader of the Pack at the Bottom Line in NYC, and for Robby Benson’s first musical Open Heart which debuted in NYC in 2004. Animated voice work as Miranda Wright in 35 episodes of Disney’s Bonkers, and several episodes of The Legend of Prince Valiant, and as Cassidy in The New Adventures of Bat Man episode Torch Song.
